The South African Vegan Scene

 

I visited Cape Town, South Africa in 2023 and again in 2024 and wow the vegan scene in Cape Town and Stellenbosch has truly began to flourish. This reflects a growing awareness and demand for plant-based dining options. As a traveler, I've noticed a vibrant array of vegan eateries and initiatives that cater to diverse tastes and preferences. 

Over the next few weeks, I will look at some of the amazing vegan and plant-based food we had on our travels. Restaurants like Java Cafe, How Bao Now, Blue Kiwi Organic, Woolworths, Rick's Cafe and Shift Coffee, will all receive some mentions. Additionally the vegan options on Emirates, was definitely something to write home about, so please keep a lookout for that post too! 

The vegan scene in Cape Town and Stellenbosch is thriving, with an increasing number of restaurants, community events, and a growing awareness of plant-based living. This boom since 2023 makes it an exciting time for both locals and travellers to explore the diverse and delicious vegan options available in these beautiful regions of South Africa.  

Introducing: Monkey Banana Beginnings

As Monkey Banana interacts with his animal friends, he learns about their struggles, particularly the threats they face from humans hunting them for fur,  meat, and their feathers. This aspect of the story introduces children to the concept of animal advocacy and the importance of protecting wildlife, making it both an entertaining and educational read.

Review: Habitu

If you're looking for a spot to relax after browsing and buying books at Eslite Bookstore, Hysan Place, Habitu is a good choice as it is accessible from the bookstore. Offering a mix of wholesome food and unique drinks, this cafe provides a serene escape from the busy Causeway Bay area. Among their offerings, the beetroot latte and kale salad stand out as some of the only vegan options they have.

The beetroot latte offers a unique, vibrant twist on the traditional latte experience. Its striking pink hue is visually appealing, and the subtle earthy sweetness of the beetroot compliments an oat milk base well. There is a pleasing balance without the bitterness of coffee, making it a great caffeine-free alternative. However, the flavour might be an acquired taste if you're not used to beetroot's natural richness. 

The kale salad is a refreshing and nutritious choice. The kale is fresh and crisp, balanced by a variety of toppings that add texture and flavour. Depending on the daily menu the toppings include an array of vegetables and nuts with a tangy vinaigrette. It's a satisfying, healthy option that pairs well with the beetroot latte. 

Together the beetroot latte and kale salad make for a wholesome, health-conscious meal in a cozy, relaxing setting at Habitu. Perfect for a quick break while exploring Eslite. 

 

Review: The Secret Life of Groceries
